The reason this tool exists separately from your PDF reader is that most readers only rotate the view. You turn the page to read it, close the file, and it opens sideways again for the next person — because nothing was actually changed. This writes the rotation into the document itself, so it stays fixed for everyone who opens it afterwards.
Scanners are the usual cause. A stack fed in the wrong way round, or a landscape page in a portrait batch, and you end up with a document that is fine except for three pages. That is why you can name specific pages rather than being forced to turn the whole file.
Rotation is lossless. Nothing is re-rendered and no quality is lost — the page content is untouched and only its orientation flag changes.
Every page appears as a thumbnail as soon as you add the file, which removes the guesswork from naming pages. You can click the sideways ones directly rather than counting through the document to work out that it is pages 7, 8 and 14, and the page numbers fill in as you click. Typing into the box still works and keeps the thumbnails in step, so whichever way round you prefer to think about it, the two stay in agreement.
Turning is also additive and normalised, which matters more than it sounds. A page already sitting at 270 degrees, turned another 90, lands at 0 rather than at 360 — an angle some readers reject outright. And if you have a folder of scans with the same problem, add them all at once: the same rotation is applied to each and the results come back together as a ZIP.
