The reason to convert is that a spreadsheet is a live document. Send someone an .xlsx and they can change a figure, break a formula, or open it in software that reformats the dates. Send a PDF and they see exactly what you sent. That is why invoices, reports, timesheets and price lists get converted before they go out — and those are precisely the files that contain client names, salaries and margins, which makes uploading them to a conversion site an unappealing default.
Every sheet in the workbook becomes its own section, titled with the sheet name, and long tables paginate with the header row repeated at the top of each page. Column widths are calculated from the actual content rather than split evenly, so a column of dates does not get the same space as a column of descriptions. Cells too wide for their column are truncated with an ellipsis rather than wrapped, because a spreadsheet row that grows to three lines stops resembling the sheet it came from. What this does not do is reproduce Excel's own styling — cell colours, conditional formatting, charts and merged cells are not carried over; the values are.

- The content was wider than its column. Cells are truncated rather than wrapped so rows stay one line tall and the table still reads like a spreadsheet.
